A firmware developer or an IoT developer typically builds the first version. A firmware engineer or an IoT engineer typically keeps an existing device or fleet running: updates, monitoring and security over time.
Where devices can reach the internet directly, a cloud connected pattern through a platform such as AWS IoT or Azure IoT Hub usually fits. Where latency, bandwidth or security rules that out, an edge computing engineer builds the local processing layer instead.

Straight answers
An IoT developer usually works above the device: cloud platforms, dashboards and the data a fleet of sensors sends. An embedded engineer works on the device itself, writing the firmware or low level software that runs directly on the hardware. Many projects need both.
