Native Kotlin apps
Interfaces built with Jetpack Compose or the older View system, written in Kotlin, Google’s own recommended language for new Android work.
Mobile Development
Building and shipping native Android apps to Google Play, as a dedicated developer, a scoped project, recruitment support or consulting.
Businesses hire an Android developer in Dubai when an app has to work well across a wide, genuinely varied range of devices and manufacturers, rather than a single hardware line. Android’s own openness is its strength and its complexity: screen sizes, chipset performance and manufacturer customisations all vary, and an Android developer who has actually shipped apps into that spread knows where the real compatibility risks sit.
Getting an app into Google Play also comes with its own moving requirements. Google raises the minimum Android API level a new app or update must target on a regular schedule, and an Android developer who tracks that requirement keeps an app publishable, while one who does not can find updates quietly rejected months after the original build shipped.
What the role builds
Real platform depth, not a generic mobile build.
Interfaces built with Jetpack Compose or the older View system, written in Kotlin, Google’s own recommended language for new Android work.
Store listings, the Data safety section, and a build that meets Google Play’s current target API level requirement, handled before it becomes a blocker.
Testing across the genuinely different phones and screen sizes Android devices come in, not just the reference emulator Android Studio opens by default.
Keeping the app’s target API level current as Google’s requirement moves forward, so published updates keep being accepted year after year.
Notifications, background work, biometric sign in and integration with system features such as location or the camera, where the app genuinely needs them.
Networking code that calls your existing or new backend, handling flaky connections gracefully rather than leaving a screen stuck loading.
Agree these deliverables in writing before you hire an Android developer in Dubai, so the scope is clear regardless of which engagement model you choose.
Skills that matter
Current tools and current practice, checked against Google’s own documentation.
| Skill or tool | What good looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kotlin and Jetpack Compose | Comfortable building modern interfaces in Compose, with View system knowledge for older screens | Kotlin and Compose are Google’s current default for new Android work |
| Target API level | Knows the current requirement and keeps builds updated against it | An app that falls behind stops receiving accepted updates on Google Play |
| Device and manufacturer testing | Tests on a real spread of devices, not one reference phone | Android’s device variety is where compatibility bugs actually surface |
| Data safety and privacy | Fills out Google Play’s Data safety section accurately, not as a formality | An inaccurate declaration is a policy issue, not a minor detail |
| Background work and battery | Uses Android’s current APIs for background tasks rather than older, battery heavy patterns | Poor background behaviour gets an app flagged or uninstalled by users |
Google’s own page on meeting Google Play’s target API level requirement sets out exactly what a submission must meet, and it is worth asking any Android developer directly how they keep existing apps current against it.
Ways to work with us
Add a dedicated Android developer to your team when the app keeps growing and someone needs to own its Kotlin codebase week after week, taking direction from your own product plan. Choose a project when the shape of the work is known upfront, such as a first launch on Google Play or one large feature, and you want a clean, documented handover once it ships. Ask for recruitment support when the plan is to employ an Android developer directly, and let us shortlist candidates and run the technical part of the interview. Bring in consulting when an Android app already exists and what you actually need is a second, independent set of eyes on its code, its performance or a policy change Google has just announced.
Assessing a candidate
Checks that expose real platform experience.
Something they published themselves or built at a past employer, and ask them to walk you through one compatibility bug that only showed up on a specific device.
Every app they maintain has to move forward when Google raises the requirement. Ask what that process actually looks like across their current workload.
Open an actual screen’s source together and ask how it behaves when the phone rotates or the process is killed and restarted by the system.
Which manufacturers and screen sizes they actually test against, beyond the single reference emulator that ships with Android Studio.
A Data safety declaration is a judgement call as much as a form. Their reasoning tells you how carefully they treat compliance work generally.
Run this list yourself, or let our recruitment support service put an Android candidate through it on your behalf. Either way, it is the most reliable way to hire an Android developer in Dubai without relying on a CV alone.
Certifications
Google’s own credential for this role has been retired, so treat any claimed “certified Android developer” carefully.
Google’s Associate Android Developer certification is officially retired and closed to new registrations, according to its own certification page, though holders who earned it before retirement keep it through its expiry date. It should not be presented as a current, ongoing credential.
Their own Google Play listings are the closest thing to proof this role has. Pair that with a genuine code review and a direct question about how they keep an app’s target API level from falling behind, and a certificate stops being necessary before you hire an Android developer in Dubai for the role.
UAE considerations
Two areas that come up in real Dubai Android projects.
Android’s layout system mirrors for Arabic automatically in most standard components, but a custom widget or a chart rarely mirrors correctly on its own, so budget real testing time for it rather than trusting the framework by default.
An Android app that offers sign in through UAE PASS, the country’s national digital identity, follows the same app to app login pattern UAE PASS publishes for mobile integration, which avoids the security pitfalls of a homegrown version.
This Android role belongs to our mobile development category, inside the broader hire developers in Dubai section. A codebase written specifically in Kotlin, outside the wider Android role, points to the language specific Kotlin developer instead. Pair this page with our iOS developer role for the same product on Apple’s side, or skip the native split entirely with Flutter developer or React Native developer for one shared codebase. When the project needs design and app store growth work too, our mobile app development service wraps all of it together.
Straight answers
Because the app needs to sit close to Google's own platform, for example deep use of Android specific system features, wide device compatibility across many manufacturers, or performance work that a shared codebase does not reach as cleanly.
Kotlin. Google's own Android developer documentation recommends Kotlin as the preferred language for new Android apps, and most current Android teams write new code in it, with Java still common in older codebases that have not been migrated.
Google requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level before they can be published, and this requirement moves forward roughly once a year. An Android developer needs to keep an app updated against it or updates stop being accepted.
Yes, and it usually works out better. Google Play raises its target API requirement periodically and device manufacturers ship new Android versions on their own schedules, so an app benefits from a developer who already understands its codebase handling that ongoing work.
Some do, but Android and iOS use separate languages, tools and review processes, so many businesses hire an Android developer and an iOS developer as a pair, or choose a cross platform framework such as Flutter or React Native instead.
