A booklet earns its place when a subject needs more room than a folded sheet allows but less than a book. In Dubai we see booklets used as company profiles taken to tender meetings, induction manuals for new staff, conference programmes, school prospectuses and product guides packed with equipment. We design booklets for businesses across Dubai and the wider UAE, plan every page before layout begins, and deliver files that your printer can impose and bind without surprises.

Below you will find the decisions that shape a booklet brief: format, binding, page count, how Arabic and English share the pages, and what to have ready. For a single folded sheet, the brochure design page is a better fit. The print design hub lists every print format we cover.

Binding

Saddle stitched or perfect bound booklet design: what the page count decides

Binding is the first technical decision, because it sets the page count rules, the inner margins and the cover design.

Page countMust be a multiple of four, because each folded sheet makes four pagesPrinters often work in multiples of two or four; ask for their rule

Spine textNo spine to print onSpine width comes from the page count and paper, confirmed by the printer

For a saddle stitched booklet design in Dubai, cover pages still count: a 16 page booklet is the cover, inside cover, twelve inner pages, inside back and back.

Format

Choosing a booklet size and design that folds from a standard sheet

For a booklet design in Dubai, the ISO 216 A series halves neatly, so an A5 booklet is made from A4 spreads and an A4 booklet from A3 spreads. That keeps paper waste low and gives printers a format they run every day. A5 suits programmes and handbooks that travel in a bag. A4 suits profiles and reports with charts and large photographs. Square formats, such as 210 × 210 mm, look distinctive on a table but usually mean more trimming, so check with your printer before committing.

ISO 216 also defines how to indicate the machine direction of paper, the direction its fibres run. Printers call this grain. Folding with the grain gives a clean spine; folding across it on heavier stock can crack the ink along the fold. It is a question worth asking when you choose a heavier cover.

Common booklet design specifications

  • A5 portrait, 148 × 210 mm, saddle stitched
  • A4 portrait, 210 × 297 mm, saddle stitched or perfect bound
  • A5 landscape for photo led programmes
  • Square 210 × 210 mm for design led profiles
  • Heavier cover stock with lighter inner pages

Arabic and English

Three ways to build a bilingual booklet in Dubai

The W3C Arabic layout requirements explain that when Arabic is the main script, page progression also runs from right to left, so an Arabic booklet is bound on the right and opens the opposite way to an English one. That single fact shapes booklet design decisions for bilingual work in Dubai.

Flip booklet

Two front covers. Start from one end and read English, turn the booklet over and start from the other for Arabic. The two halves meet in the middle. Each language keeps its natural reading direction.

Facing pages

English on one page, Arabic on the page opposite, with shared images spanning both. It suits short programmes but doubles every layout decision, and text lengths must be balanced page by page.

Two editions

A separate Arabic booklet bound on the right and an English booklet bound on the left. It costs a second print run but gives the most natural reading experience for each audience.

Planning

The flatplan comes before the first page is designed

A flatplan is a page by page map of the booklet. We agree it with you at the start of the Create stage for every booklet design project in Dubai, because moving a section later can push every following page out of place.

  1. List every section

Welcome message, about the company, services, projects, team, contact. Note which sections must start on a right hand page.

  2. Assign pages

Give each section a page range and check the total lands on a number the binding allows. Add or remove a section, not a random blank page.

  3. Mark spreads

Decide where an image or chart runs across two facing pages, so nothing important falls into the fold.

  4. Lock the copy

Final text, approved by whoever signs it off, before layout starts in earnest.

Technical detail

Spine margins, creep and other booklet design checks

In a saddle stitched booklet design for Dubai clients, the inner pages sit further out than the outer pages once the sheets are nested. When the booklet is trimmed, those middle pages lose a little more from their outer edge. Printers call this creep. We keep page numbers and running text a comfortable distance from the outer edge so nothing is shaved away in the centre pages.

In a perfect bound booklet the glue grips a strip of each page at the spine, so text needs a wider inner margin. Images that cross a spread need the key subject kept out of the gutter. Page numbers need care in bilingual flip formats, where each half counts from its own front cover.

What to prepare before the brief

  • Purpose of the booklet and who receives it
  • Approximate page count and preferred size
  • Final text, in English, Arabic or both
  • Photographs at full resolution with usage rights
  • Charts as data, not screenshots
  • Your printer’s binding and file specification

Booklet design alongside the rest of your material

A company profile booklet often sits next to a slide deck built from the same content. We can keep the two consistent, with the deck covered on our presentation design page. If the booklet is mainly a list of products with codes and specifications, catalogue design is the better route. When the text itself still needs writing, our content writing service can draft the profile copy that the booklet then presents.

Every booklet project starts with a fixed written quote, scoped to your brief. At handover you receive the press PDF built to your printer’s requirements and, if you ask for it, a lighter screen PDF for email and download.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a booklet and a catalogue?

A booklet is usually read from front to back: a profile, a manual or a programme. A catalogue is scanned for products, prices and codes, and needs a structured grid and often data handling. Our catalogue design page covers that format.

Can the booklet also be sent as a PDF?

Yes. We can export a screen version alongside the press file, with spreads shown as they appear in the printed copy and links made clickable. The screen file is lighter and has no crop marks or bleed.

We have content in a Word document. Is that enough?

It is a good start. We need the final approved text, because changing copy after pages are laid out moves everything that follows. Mark headings clearly and send images as separate files, not pasted into the document.

Can you update last year's booklet rather than start again?

Usually, if the original layout files exist. If you only have a PDF, parts may need rebuilding, especially Arabic text, which often does not survive being copied out of a PDF.
