Paper placemats, tray liners and children's activity mats for UAE restaurants, hotels and cafés, laid out around the plate and supplied as print ready files for your printer.
A placemat is the one printed piece a guest looks at for the whole meal. It is there before the food arrives, around the plate while they eat, and still visible while they wait for the bill. Family restaurants, hotel breakfast rooms, burger chains and cafés in Dubai and across the UAE use that time for a welcome, a promotion, a puzzle for children, or simply a table that looks cared for. We design placemats and tray liners for all of these Dubai venues, and deliver artwork ready for your printer.
Placemats usually work next to a menu, so it helps to plan them together; see dine in menu design. For packaging that leaves the restaurant, see food box design, and for all print work, the print design hub.
Types
The material and how long each mat lives decide almost everything about the design: how much detail it can carry, how often it changes and what it costs to refresh.
| Type | Where it is used | Design approach |
|---|---|---|
| Paper placemat | Casual dining, cafés, hotel breakfast | Used once, so it can carry a monthly promotion; commonly cut to A3 (297 × 420 mm, an ISO 216 size) or close to it |
| Tray liner | Quick service and food courts | Cut to the exact tray, slightly smaller than its base; bold, simple graphics that survive grease and spills |
| Children’s activity mat | Family restaurants and hotel kids menus | One side for colouring, puzzles and games, the other for the kids menu or brand |
| Reusable laminated or synthetic mat | Venues that wipe tables between sittings | Timeless artwork with no dates or prices, since it stays in service for months |
| Event or gala dinner mat | Corporate dinners, weddings, awards nights | Programme, seating or sponsor recognition for one evening only |
Layout
The biggest mistake in placemat design for Dubai restaurants is treating it like a poster. Once a plate lands, the centre of the mat disappears. Cutlery covers the side strips, a glass or cup sits at the top right for most right handed guests, and a sauce pot or phone often takes the top left. Anything important placed in those zones is hidden for most of the meal.
We start every placemat with a place setting diagram at real size, using your actual plate diameter and tray dimensions, and put the content where it remains visible: the top band, the lower corners and the outer edges. The centre is best kept for a light pattern or illustration that looks good while it is still empty.
Children
A good activity placemat design gives parents a calmer meal in Dubai and gives children something to take home, which keeps your brand on a fridge door. The activities need to match the age range you actually serve and the crayons you actually hand out. Thick outlines work for young children; mazes and spot the difference suit older ones.
Many UAE families read Arabic first, so we design puzzles that work in both languages rather than translating an English word search letter by letter. Arabic word games run right to left, letters join, and a grid built for English will not work. Characters and scenes should feel local: a desert, a dhow, a skyline or your own mascot rather than generic imported clip art.
Practical points
A placemat meets water, heat, sauce and cutlery. A few production conversations with your printer early on prevent mats that curl, bleed or smudge.
Cold drinks in the UAE sweat heavily, especially on terraces. Uncoated paper wrinkles under a glass. Ask your printer about paper weight and whether a coating suits contact with plates and trays, and follow their advice on inks; this is a common detail in placemat design for Dubai venues.
Dubai’s Executive Council Resolution No. 124 of 2023 on single use products lists plastic table covers among items prohibited from 1 January 2025, according to the Dubai Government Media Office. Venues that relied on plastic covers may be reviewing alternatives, and a printed paper mat is one to discuss with your supplier.
Paper mats are reprinted in regular runs anyway, so they suit rotating content. In placemat design for Dubai venues, we build a fixed frame with a swappable promotion panel, so a new month needs only a new panel, not a new layout.
Because guests sit with it for so long, a placemat is a good place to point people online: a QR code to your loyalty programme, an Instagram handle, or a delivery ordering page for next time, which links naturally to a takeout menu. The same illustration style can run through social media design so the table and the feed look related. If your restaurant does not yet have a clear visual style to build from, brand identity design is the place to begin.
We move through Brief, Proposal, Create, Review and Deliver for every placemat design project in Dubai, and before approval we print the mat at real size and place a plate, glass and cutlery on it to confirm the key content stays visible. Share your tray or table size and we will reply with a written proposal within 45 minutes during business hours.

For a short menu in a casual venue, sometimes. It works for set breakfasts, kids menus or a handful of combos, but prices then live on thousands of sheets that are costly to replace. Many venues keep the full menu separate and use the placemat for highlights and promotions.
Many venues do, for example a nearby gym or school. We design a grid with fixed advertiser panels and supply a template so each partner's artwork drops in at the right size. Any claims in their adverts remain their responsibility.
It depends on your table and tray size, so measure a real tray or place setting before we start. Paper mats are commonly cut to A3 or close to it, and tray liners must be slightly smaller than the tray so they sit flat.
Price depends on how many versions you need, whether there is an activity side, and the languages. We send a fixed written quote, scoped to your brief, once we know those details.
