A hang tag is the small card tied to a garment, bag or gift that a shopper turns over before deciding. In a Dubai mall boutique or an abaya showroom, it has to answer the practical questions quickly (price, size, fabric) and still feel like part of the brand. We design hang tags and swing tags for fashion labels, modest wear houses, gift and homeware brands across the UAE, and we prepare files ready for the tag printer you choose.

This page covers hang tag design in Dubai: what a tag should carry, how it relates to the labels sewn into a product, and the UAE rules on price and language that affect its content. For product boxes and bags, see packaging design. All print formats are gathered on the print design hub.

Tag or label

Hang tag, sewn label or price sticker: who carries what

Retail products usually carry more than one piece of printed information, which is why hang tag design in Dubai starts with deciding which piece holds each detail, keeping the tag clean and stopping essential information being thrown away with it.

GSO 863:1997 is the Gulf standard for identification labels on textile products, and ISO 3758:2023 sets the care labelling code using symbols. Your manufacturer or a conformity body can confirm which label content your product category requires in the UAE.

UAE rules

Price, VAT and Arabic on retail tags in the UAE

Three official texts shape what a UAE retail tag says. Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 on Consumer Protection, Article 8, requires the supplier to place the price clearly on a good offered for sale. Article 7 of the same law asks for explanatory information to be placed on the cover or package, or where it is displayed, in a clear and legible manner. Article 26 states that data and advertisements related to the consumer are made in Arabic, with other languages allowed alongside.

Hang tag design in Dubai has to follow this rule closely: the UAE Federal Tax Authority adds that a VAT registrant must show prices advertised to consumers inclusive of VAT, and lists price tags explicitly. In design terms, the price area must be large enough to read at arm’s length, show the VAT inclusive figure, and sit in a consistent position so staff never miss it when repricing.

We are designers, not legal advisers, so confirm specific obligations for your products with your licensing authority.

A typical hang tag holds

  • Logo and brand name in Arabic and English
  • Product or collection name
  • Style code and colour name
  • Size, in the system your customers use
  • VAT inclusive price, printed or in a sticker area
  • Barcode space sized for your scanners
  • Short material or story line
  • QR code or website on the reverse

Physical design

Shape, string and stock for a Dubai boutique tag

Hang tag design for a Dubai boutique is a small object as much as a printed card. How it hangs, turns and feels in the hand does a lot of the brand work.

Shape

Rectangles are simple and efficient to cut. Rounded corners, arches or a shape echoing your logo need a custom cutting die, which your printer makes once and reuses for every reorder.

Hole position

The hole decides which way the tag hangs. A hole at the top centre makes it swing straight; a corner hole angles it. We keep text well clear of the hole and any metal eyelet.

Thickness and finish

Heavy board, duplexed layers, foil on the logo or a soft touch coating signal a premium piece. Every finish needs its own artwork layer, so decide early.

Fastening

Cotton string, satin ribbon, a safety pin or a plastic loop pin each suit different fabrics. Delicate abaya fabrics may need a ribbon through a label loop rather than a pin through cloth.

Fixed and variable

Designing one tag for hundreds of products

Many brands doing hang tag design in Dubai print tags in bulk before they know every price. The answer is a tag with two kinds of content. Fixed content, such as logo, story and pattern, is printed on every tag. Variable content, such as size, price and barcode, goes in reserved areas that are filled later, either by a printer running variable data or by a label printer in your stockroom.

A common problem we see is a variable area too small for the barcode your point of sale system actually produces, so stickers overlap the design. We ask for a sample barcode label and the longest price and product name you expect, then size the reserved areas around them. Arabic product names often run a different length from English, so both are tested.

  • Reserved areas marked on a separate layer for the printer
  • Sample tags filled with your longest real data before approval
  • Front and reverse proofs checked at actual size, printed on paper

For your hang tag brief

  • Product types and the fabrics they use
  • A photo of your current tag and sewn labels, if any
  • Your price and barcode format
  • Languages and which one leads
  • Fastening you prefer
  • Logo files and brand guidelines
  • Printer name and their tag templates, if chosen

Tags as part of a retail identity

Hang tag design in Dubai should look like it came from the same hand as your carrier bag, store signage and online store. If the logo does not reduce well to a small card, logo design can produce a compact version for tags and labels. Brands launching a full range often start with brand identity design so tags, bags and boxes share one system. When the short story line on the tag is hard to write, our product description writing service can draft it alongside your online listings.

We work through Brief, Proposal, Create, Review and Deliver, and you approve a printed actual size proof of front and reverse before files are released. Send us a photo of your products and current tags, and we will return a written fixed price proposal within 45 minutes during business hours.

Frequently asked questions

Should the care instructions be on the hang tag or the sewn label?

Put care instructions on the permanent label sewn into the garment, because the hang tag is removed at home and thrown away. The hang tag can repeat a short care note if it helps the sale, for example hand wash only on a delicate piece.

Can we use one hang tag design for every product?

Yes, and many brands do. We design a master tag with fixed branding and blank areas for the variable details, which your printer or a label printer in store fills per item. Seasonal collections can change a colour or the reverse side without redesigning everything.

Do hang tags work for online orders too?

They matter even more there, because the tag is part of the unboxing moment. A QR code on the reverse linking to care videos, size guidance or a reorder page gives an online customer a reason to keep it.

What do you need to quote for hang tags?

Tell us how many tag types you need, whether prices and barcodes are printed on or added later, the languages, and any finishing you have in mind. We then send a fixed written quote, scoped to your brief.
