For a burger bar, a shawarma counter or a cloud kitchen in Dubai, the box is often the only part of the brand a customer holds. It arrives at a desk in Business Bay or a villa in Mirdif, gets opened on camera, and sits on a table for the length of a meal. We design fast food boxes, fries scoops, pizza boxes, noodle cartons, bags and sleeves for food businesses across Dubai and the UAE, and we supply artwork built on the exact template your packaging manufacturer uses.

This is graphic design for food service packaging. For retail product packaging such as cartons for shelves, see packaging design. For the printed menu that travels in the same bag, see takeout menu design, and for every print format, the print design hub.

Dielines

Why food box artwork starts with the manufacturer’s dieline

A dieline is the flat drawing of a box before it is cut, folded and glued. It shows where the cutting die slices the board, where creases fold, which flaps are glued, and which areas end up hidden inside. Artwork placed without it can look perfect on screen and then fold a logo in half or print your phone number on a glue flap.

Box manufacturers each produce their own dielines, even for shapes that look identical, because board thickness and machinery differ. So the first thing we ask for in food box design for Dubai kitchens is the dieline from the supplier who will actually make your boxes, in vector format, with the board type noted.

  • Cut, crease and glue lines kept on separate, clearly named layers
  • Background colour extended past cut lines to the margin the manufacturer asks for
  • Glue areas left free of ink or varnish if the maker requires it
  • Text kept away from folds, where board cracks and ink can flake
  • A 3D mockup made from the dieline so you can check which panel faces the customer

Ask your box supplier for

  • The dieline file for each box size
  • Board or paper type and whether it is white or kraft
  • Print method and maximum number of colours
  • Whether the inside surface can be printed
  • Coating or grease barrier details
  • Their food contact documentation for the material and inks
  • Minimum order quantity per design

Rules in Dubai

Plastic bans and food contact materials for Dubai food packaging

Two sets of rules shape what a takeaway box can be made of. Neither is decided by the designer, but both affect the artwork brief.

Dubai single use products resolution

Executive Council Resolution No. 124 of 2023 regulates single use products in Dubai, including free zones. According to the Dubai Government Media Office, styrofoam food containers were among the items prohibited from 1 January 2025, and plastic plates, tableware, beverage cups and their plastic lids from 1 January 2026. The Media Office announcement also listed plastic food containers for 2026, but Dubai Municipality’s January 2026 guidance says the ban is not being applied to plastic containers during 2026, so check the current position before ordering stock. Our guide to the Dubai single use plastic ban sets out both. If you are moving from foam or plastic to board, the new material changes print options, so we plan the artwork for it from the start.

Food contact materials

The Gulf standard GSO 839:2021 sets general requirements for food packages made of materials including paper and carton. Compliance of board, coatings and inks is the responsibility of the manufacturer, and we do not certify materials. What we can do is keep ink off areas the manufacturer tells us touch food and follow their instructions on inside printing.

Rules change and exemptions exist for food box design in Dubai, so confirm current requirements with Dubai Municipality or your emirate’s authority, and with your packaging supplier, before ordering.

Design notes for common fast food packaging

Each shape has a panel the customer sees first and a surface that takes the most abuse, which is why food box design in Dubai plans the artwork around both.

ItemPanel seen firstDesign note
Burger clamshellLid top, then the inside of the lid when openedInside lid artwork appears upside down to the customer unless planned; a short line or pattern there is a pleasant surprise
Fries scoop or coneFront face, above the food lineGrease shows through lower areas on uncoated board, so keep the logo high
Pizza boxLid top, often stackedLarge flat lid suits bold graphics; add a side panel with the brand name so stacked boxes are identifiable
Noodle or rice cartonTwo tapered facesTapered panels distort straight lines and wide logos; test on the mockup
Paper bagBoth large faces and the gussetHandles and folds interrupt artwork; kraft bags usually print one or two solid colours best
Cup sleeve or wrapA curved bandArtwork is drawn as an arc on a flat template; lettering must follow it

In the kitchen

Food box packaging that helps staff as well as customers

A busy pass in a Dubai kitchen sends out dozens of near identical boxes an hour, which is why good food box design builds in space for the operation: a clear area for an order sticker, tick boxes for common variations such as spicy or no onion, and colour coding by product family so a rider can see a chicken box from a beef box at a glance.

Kraft board is popular for its natural look, but printing ink on brown board darkens colours and softens fine detail. Bright brand colours may need a white base printed underneath, which not every supplier offers. A common problem we see is a logo designed for screens that loses its thin lines at box printing quality. We simplify marks where needed so they read at the size and method actually used.

Bilingual box panels

  • Brand name in Arabic and English on at least one visible face
  • Short product names in both languages for sticker or tick areas
  • Social handles and ordering routes that read the same in both
  • Directional graphics planned so they suit right to left reading too

Building a food box packaging family rather than single boxes

Customers see several pieces together in one delivery: bag, box, sticker, napkin and menu. We design them as one food box family for Dubai brands, starting with the item that sets the style and extending it to the rest, so reorders from different suppliers still look related. If your brand mark is not yet strong enough to carry a box on its own, logo design or brand identity design comes first.

The work follows our Brief, Proposal, Create, Review and Deliver stages. You approve every box on its 3D mockup before we release production artwork, and each file is named with the box type and supplier code so your manufacturer receives exactly what you signed off.

Frequently asked questions

Can you create the dieline for a new box shape?

We design graphics for boxes, not the structural engineering of new shapes. A packaging manufacturer or structural designer produces and tests the dieline for strength, folding and machine gluing, and we build the artwork on that file. For stock shapes, most manufacturers already have one ready.

Should every item have its own printed box?

Rarely. A common approach is one or two fully printed hero boxes for signature items, with plain or single colour stock packaging sealed by a branded sticker for everything else. That keeps minimum order quantities and storage space under control.

Can we print our halal certificate logo on the box?

Only if your certification body allows its mark on your packaging and tells you how it must appear. Send us their usage rules with the logo file and we place it exactly as they specify.

What do you need to quote for food box artwork?

The list of box types, the dielines if you have them, your logo and brand guidelines, and the languages required. From that we send a fixed written quote, scoped to your brief.

Will the colours on the box match our menu and signage?

They can come very close, but board, kraft and coated paper each take ink differently from a menu card or a lightbox. Ask the manufacturer for a printed sample on the real material and approve colour from that, not from a screen.
