Most Dubai businesses that hire a cloud architect are not choosing a piece of technology, they are choosing a direction that is expensive to reverse later. Which provider to build on, how to structure accounts and networks, whether to migrate an existing system or rebuild it, and how much of the design should span more than one provider are all decisions a cloud architect works through before serious build spending begins, rather than questions that get answered by whoever happens to start coding first.

That framing is deliberately different from a cloud developer or a cloud engineer, both of whom work inside a decision the architect has already made. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s definition of cloud computing lists on demand self service, resource pooling and rapid elasticity as shared traits across providers, but how much of that a specific system actually needs, and from which provider, is exactly the judgement call a cloud architect is hired to make.

What a cloud architect decides

Typical cloud architect decisions for a Dubai business

Architecture decisions that shape everything built afterward.

Which provider, and why

A comparison of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud against your actual workload, existing skills and constraints, not a generic ranking copied from a blog post.

Target architecture

The shape of the system: which services handle compute, data, messaging and identity, and how they fit together before anyone starts building.

Migration strategy

Whether an existing system moves as is, gets partly rebuilt, or is replaced entirely, sequenced so the business keeps running throughout.

Account and network structure

How environments, teams and workloads are separated, so one mistake in one area cannot easily affect another.

Security and compliance shape

The baseline identity, logging and data handling design a system needs from day one, rather than bolted on after an incident.

Cost model

A realistic projection of what an architecture will cost to run at expected scale, checked against the business case for building it.

Businesses that hire a cloud architect in Dubai often expect a provider recommendation alone, when the more valuable output is usually the six decisions above, written down together.

Skills that matter

What to check before you hire a cloud architect in Dubai

Breadth across providers, backed by the judgement to know when depth on one matters more.

Skill or toolWhat good looks likeWhy it matters
Genuine cross provider knowledgeHas designed real systems on more than one of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, not just read the marketing pagesA single provider specialist can undervalue options they know less well
A documented decision methodCan show how they weighed provider or service options on a past project, with the tradeoffs written downAn undocumented decision is hard to revisit when circumstances change
Migration experienceHas actually moved a live system between environments or providers, not only designed on a blank pageMigrations fail in ways that only show up once real data and real users are involved
Cost modellingBuilds a rough cost projection as part of the design, before the first resource is provisionedArchitecture decisions made without a cost view often need expensive rework later
Communication with non technical stakeholdersCan explain a target architecture and its tradeoffs to people who do not write codeA design that only the architect understands is a risk if that person leaves

AWS frames its own Well-Architected Framework around operational excellence, security, reliability, performance and cost, and a competent cloud architect should be applying an equivalent set of tradeoffs whichever provider a project ends up on.

Ways to work with us

How to hire a cloud architect in Dubai

Consulting is the natural fit for this role: a defined period of architecture work producing a decision, a diagram and a written rationale a client can act on with or without us. Recruitment support suits a business that wants an architect on its own payroll for ongoing decisions, where we source and technically assess candidates on your behalf. A scoped project fits when the same engagement continues from design into a defined build. A dedicated hire suits a larger organisation making architecture decisions continually across many systems, rather than a single business case.

Which model fits a cloud architect hire

  • Consulting: a provider decision or a target architecture, written down
  • Recruitment support: an architect on your own payroll long term
  • Project: design through to a defined build, then handover
  • Dedicated: continuous architecture decisions across many systems

Assessing a candidate

How to assess a cloud architect

Checks that separate genuine cross provider judgement from a single specialism dressed up as breadth.

Apply these checks yourself, or let our team run them as part of a recruitment support or consulting engagement.

  1. Ask a cloud architect for a decision they reversed

A candidate who once recommended one provider or pattern, then changed course with good reason, shows real judgement rather than a fixed loyalty.

  2. Present a small, realistic scenario

Describe a workload close to yours and ask how they would approach the provider question, out loud, including what information they would still need. It is one of the more revealing ways to hire a cloud architect in Dubai, since the reasoning shows more than the final answer.

  3. Ask what they would not migrate yet

A strong architect can name systems that are not worth touching right now, not only ones that are.

  4. Review a past architecture diagram

Ask them to walk through one, including the parts that did not work as planned and what changed afterward.

  5. Check how they handle disagreement

Ask how they have pushed back on a stakeholder who wanted a specific provider for the wrong reasons, and how that conversation went.

The point of these checks, whichever way you hire a cloud architect in Dubai, is to see the reasoning behind a decision, not just the decision itself.

Certifications

Certifications worth asking for

Professional level, provider specific certifications are a reasonable filter, but architecture judgement itself is not certified by any single body.

Professional certifications for a cloud architect

AWS runs an AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional certification aimed at people with real experience designing and implementing cloud solutions across complex organisations, according to its own certification page. Azure and Google Cloud run comparable professional level architect certifications.

What to look at instead

A certification shows a candidate can pass a structured exam about one provider. It does not show they can weigh AWS against Azure against Google Cloud for your specific workload, which is the harder and more valuable part of this role.

Treat a certification as one filter among several when you hire a cloud architect in Dubai, and lean more heavily on the decision reversed question above.

UAE considerations

UAE points worth raising with a cloud architect

Two areas that genuinely belong in a Dubai architecture decision.

Data residency as a design input

The UAE’s own summary of Federal Decree Law No. 45 of 2021 sets rules on cross border transfer of personal data, so where a system’s data will physically sit should be an explicit part of a Dubai architecture decision, not an afterthought once a provider is already chosen.

A regional option physically in the UAE

AWS confirmed its Middle East (UAE) region, with three availability zones, went live in 2022, according to its own announcement, giving a genuine in country option that a Dubai focused architecture decision should at least weigh against a regional alternative.

This role sits in our cloud category, part of the wider hire developers in Dubai section. Where the provider is already fixed and the need is AWS specific design depth, our AWS Solutions Architect page goes further. Where a genuine multi provider system is the goal rather than a single choice, see multi-cloud architect. Once the architecture is decided and building begins, our cloud developer and cloud engineer pages cover the build and operate side.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a cloud architect if we already know we want AWS, Azure or Google Cloud?

Knowing the provider is only part of the decision. A cloud architect still designs the target architecture, the account structure, the network layout and the migration path within that provider, so the role is useful even after the provider question is settled.

Is choosing a cloud provider mostly about price?

Price is one factor among several, alongside which managed services fit your workload, where your team's existing skills sit, data residency needs, and how the provider's ecosystem matches your other systems. We never advise on cost as a headline figure without scoping the actual workload.

Can a cloud architect design for more than one provider?

Yes, and for some businesses that is the right answer, for reasons such as regulation or resilience. That is a deliberate, more complex decision, and our multi-cloud architect page covers when it is genuinely worth the added complexity.

How long does a cloud architecture engagement usually take?

It depends entirely on the scope, from a short review of an existing setup to a full target architecture for a migration. We agree the scope and the deliverable in writing before work starts, rather than an open ended retainer.

Do you build what the cloud architect designs?

Often yes, either the same team continues into a build as a project or dedicated developers, or we hand the design to your existing team, whichever the client prefers.
