Short form video in Dubai: what to film, who films it, and why most of it is never watched

The formats that work for ordinary businesses, the production standard that is genuinely enough, the permissions filming here requires, and how to judge whether any of it did anything.

Short form video in Dubai is usually commissioned the wrong way round. A business books a production day, produces four polished films, publishes them over a fortnight, and then has nothing for the following six months. The videos are well made and the account goes quiet, which is the opposite of what the format rewards.

What follows is what to film, the standard that is genuinely enough, what you need permission for here, and how to tell whether it worked.

Short form video formats that work for ordinary businesses

Five formats suit short form video in Dubai for companies without a creative department, in rough order of how reliably they perform.

Answering a real question. One question a customer asked this week, answered in forty seconds by the person who would normally answer it. The least glamorous format and consistently the most useful.

Showing the work. The process, the install, the repair, the thing being made. People watch work being done, and it requires no presenting skill.

Before and after. Immediate, obvious, and it does the job of a case study in ten seconds.

The quick tour. The premises, the workshop, the fleet. It answers the question people here ask most about an unfamiliar supplier, which is whether you are real.

The mistake. Something customers get wrong, and what to do instead. Useful, memorable, and it positions you as the person who knows.

What rarely works is the brand film with aerial shots and music, which is expensive, shows nothing specific, and is indistinguishable from the one your competitor commissioned.

The production standard short form video actually needs

Production value matters far less in short form video in Dubai than most briefs assume, and four things matter more.

Sound. The one thing people will not forgive. Poor audio closes the video in two seconds where poor picture does not. A small microphone costs little and changes everything.

Light on the face or the subject. A window is sufficient. Overhead office light is not.

A stable frame. Something to rest the phone on. Handheld wobble reads as careless rather than as authentic.

The first two seconds. Start with the thing itself. An introduction, a logo animation or somebody saying hello loses most of the audience before the content begins.

Everything else, colour grading, transitions, music, is optional and frequently makes a simple video worse. The exception is subtitles, which are not optional, and which also serve the readers covered by the accessibility guidelines.

Producing short form video in Dubai without burning out

Short form video in Dubai demands frequency, which is why so many attempts stop after a month.

Batch the filming. One afternoon produces six to ten pieces if the list is written beforehand. The exhausting version is deciding what to film on the day you need to publish.

Keep a running list of questions customers ask. That list is your production schedule, and it refills itself every week without anybody having to be creative.

Give the job to somebody who knows the subject rather than to somebody who knows cameras. A technician explaining a problem badly on camera is more persuasive than a presenter explaining it smoothly, and audiences here are unusually good at spotting the difference.

Accept that most of it will be ordinary. The format works through volume and consistency, and a business waiting until each video is excellent publishes nothing. Our note on planning a month of posting covers where the finished pieces land.

Three things to settle before filming short form video in Dubai.

Location. Filming in many public and private places in the UAE needs clearance, and commercial filming in particular. Malls, beaches, public roads and government buildings all have their own positions. Our note on permits covers when one is required.

People. Anybody recognisable in your footage needs to have agreed to it, and the rules here are stricter than many visitors expect. The position on photographing people applies to video as well, and footage of a customer is personal data under the federal law.

Content. What you publish sits under the published media content standards, and if you promote the video as an advertisement, the platform standards apply on top.

None of this is onerous for a business filming its own premises and its own staff. It becomes a real constraint the moment you film in public or include customers, which is exactly when people forget to check.

Language, and the choice you have to make

Short form video in Dubai is harder to make bilingual than a caption, and the decision has to be made before filming rather than afterwards.

Three workable approaches. Film in one language and subtitle in the other, which is the least expensive and reads slightly as a translation. Film the same piece twice with the same person, which is the best result and doubles the shoot. Or film without speech, relying on the work and on text, which sidesteps the problem entirely and suits process and before and after formats.

What performs badly is a voice in one language with subtitles that are clearly machine produced, which is visible immediately and undermines everything else in the frame.

If Arabic matters to your audience, our note on running an Arabic feed covers the wider decision about one account or two, and video should follow whatever that decision was.

Judging whether your short form video did anything

Views are the least useful figure available in short form video in Dubai, and the one every report leads with.

Watch four things instead. How far through people get, because a video everybody abandons at three seconds has a first two seconds problem rather than a content problem. Saves and shares, which indicate something worth keeping. Messages mentioning it, which is how a response arrives in this market. And whether your own sales team sends the videos to prospects, which is the strongest signal that they are genuinely useful.

Separate the two reasons you are making these. Some pieces exist to reach people who have never heard of you, which the platforms decide, and some exist to answer a question for somebody already considering you, which you control entirely. Judging the second kind by reach is how useful videos get abandoned.

Give it longer than a month. A library of twenty short pieces answering twenty real questions does work that no individual video does, mostly by being there when somebody searches for the question at the moment they have it.

And keep the files. Material filmed for social is frequently the best raw footage you own, and it saves commissioning a shoot when the website needs something. Store it somewhere the whole team can reach rather than on the phone it was shot on, which is where most of it is quietly lost.

When to pay for production

Three cases justify paying for production rather than filming it yourself.

When the video represents the business at a moment that matters, a launch, a recruitment campaign, something a client will see before deciding on a large contract.

When the subject is genuinely difficult to film, anything requiring controlled light, scale, or filming something that cannot be repeated.

When you need the look established once so that everything filmed internally afterwards has a standard to match. This is the most useful version, and it pairs a commissioned shoot with a written specification in the same way a photography set does.

Outside those three, the weekly material is better made plainly and often than beautifully and rarely. That is the whole argument for short form video in Dubai over a production day once a year.

For the work, social video covers the regular material and commercial video covers the pieces that need a crew.

For where it goes, social media management and social advertising cover organic and paid distribution, which are different jobs.

If creators are part of the plan, running a campaign properly covers selection, usage rights and the permits that regime requires.

Where the video has to live inside a product, an application, an onboarding flow, a portal that shows the right clip at the right moment, Codeeo handles that build in Dubai.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a videographer?

For anything representing the brand at its best, yes. For the regular weekly material, a phone and somebody who knows the subject will outperform an expensive crew that visits quarterly, because frequency and specificity matter more than finish on this format.

How long should a video be?

As long as the one idea takes. Most business videos that work run under a minute because they contain one point. A three minute video containing three points usually performs worse than three separate videos, and is harder to make.

Should we add subtitles?

Always. A large share of viewing happens without sound, and in a market with this many languages subtitles also make the video usable by people who would struggle with the spoken version. Burn them in rather than relying on the platform.

Can we film in a mall or public place?

Not freely. Filming in many public and private locations here needs permission, and commercial filming in particular. Establish it before the shoot rather than after being asked to stop.

What if nobody on the team wants to be on camera?

Then film the work rather than the people. Hands, process, before and after, the thing being made or fixed. Some of the most effective business video here has no presenter at all, and it is considerably easier to produce consistently.
